Section One of this book surveys the history of the development of the American community colleges and explores legal issues associated with community college governance.

Section Two provides a state-by-state treatment of the various community college governance models in place around the country. For each state, a citation has been provided to the central governing authority, a systemic description, an explication of the respective two-year college governance model in place, information concerning enrollment, any marked recent structural developments, and citations to the various statutory and constitutional provisions creating the respective state community college systems.

This compendium of community college governance models will prove a useful resource for practicing administrators, policy-makers, faculty, and graduate students interested in community college organization and governance.
